Hidden Hollywood: 15 TV Shows and Movies You Didn’t Know Were Shot in Delaware

Delaware may be one of the smallest states in the US, but its presence on the big and small screens is far bigger than many people realise. Quiet towns, historic schools, colonial streets and scenic countryside have all helped the First State double for locations across America, often without drawing attention to themselves. Over the years, filmmakers have quietly taken advantage of Delaware’s charm, flexibility and distinctive look to bring their stories to life.

One of the most iconic films connected to the state is Dead Poets Society. Much of the movie was filmed at St Andrew’s School in Middletown, with its traditional architecture perfectly capturing the atmosphere of an elite boarding school. Wilmington and Old New Castle also featured, giving the film an authentic East Coast feel that has stayed with audiences for decades.

Delaware has also hosted more intense and dramatic productions. Films like Beloved and Clean and Sober used locations in the state to reflect emotionally heavy themes, proving that Delaware’s understated settings can support powerful storytelling. Racing drama Days of Thunder even included Delaware locations, adding another surprising genre to the state’s filming résumé.

Romantic comedies and lighter films have also found a home here. Failure to Launch shot select scenes in Delaware, blending seamlessly into a movie otherwise associated with bigger cities. Television productions have passed through as well, including the political drama Game Change, which recreated key moments using Delaware backdrops.

Independent cinema has embraced the state too. Horror and thriller projects such as The Roost and Human Hibachi were filmed in Delaware, benefiting from its quieter locations and cooperative filming environment. These projects highlight how the state continues to attract filmmakers working outside the traditional Hollywood system.

Some films are closely linked to Delaware through their stories rather than their filming locations. Fight Club is famously set in Wilmington, even though much of the movie was shot elsewhere. Similarly, the Goosebumps film adaptation is set in a fictional town in Delaware, further cementing the state’s pop culture footprint.

Other lesser known titles like Violets Are Blue, Trigger Man and Hiding Out also used Delaware settings, quietly adding to a growing list that many movie fans never notice. Taken together, these films and shows reveal how often Delaware has stepped into the spotlight while staying out of it at the same time.
