The fourth T20 International between India and South Africa in Lucknow was called off before any play could begin due to dense fog and poor visibility leaving fans disappointed and demanding refunds. The match at Ekana Cricket Stadium was repeatedly inspected by officials but conditions did not improve forcing the umpires to abandon the game entirely and sparking criticism of scheduling international fixtures in northern India during the winter months.
In response to fan frustration the Board of Control for Cricket in India issued a clarification explaining its position on refunds. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that ticket holders are entitled to refunds when a match is abandoned before any play begins but emphasised that the responsibility for processing those refunds lies with the local organising association in this case the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association which manages hosting operations and ticketing for the Lucknow match.
The board highlighted that while refund eligibility is provided under BCCI rules the practical handling of reimbursements is overseen by the state association. The statement came after reports and footage showed fans outside the stadium holding tickets and expressing disappointment at missing the chance to watch the Indian team play live. The incident has intensified discussion around fan rights and the logistics of ticketing for international cricket.
The abandonment has also reignited debate about scheduling with administrators and commentators questioning the wisdom of hosting night matches in regions prone to fog and smog at this time of year. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla suggested the board may need to reconsider how venues and match times are allocated during the winter months to prevent similar disruptions in future series.
