Celebrating Hong Kong Cinema: A New Chapter at JAFF

The upcoming collaboration between the Jogja‑NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) and the Asian Film Awards Academy (AFAA) marks a meaningful celebration of Hong Kong’s cinematic heritage against the vibrant backdrop of Yogyakarta. From November 30 to December 4, the showcase titled “Together We Dare to Direct” invites film lovers to journey through decades of Hong Kong filmmaking — uniting celebrated auteurs and emerging voices in a curated programme of features and shorts. Leading this initiative is Ann Hui, a towering figure in Asian cinema, whose masterclass promises profound insights into her creative process and contributions. Restored-in-4K classics such as her films A Simple Life and July Rhapsody sit alongside modern works, including the animated film Another World (2025), the documentary Four Trails, the action-classic The Killer, crime thriller Sons of the Neon Night and the drama The Remnant. The inclusion of shorts from emerging talents offers a platform for new storytellers. Beyond screenings, Q&A sessions and community forums will allow audiences to engage directly with filmmakers and dive deeper into their creative choices. As JAFF celebrates its 20th edition, this collaboration underscores the festival’s evolution from a regional gathering to a major cultural platform bridging Southeast Asia and Hong Kong cinema. For cinephiles seeking a broad and meaningful cinematic experience, this showcase offers a rare window into the evolution and ongoing creativity of Hong Kong’s film industry.
