Aprilia has confirmed that its new 850cc MotoGP engine is already built and running on the test bench as the team prepares for the major regulation changes coming in 2027. The Italian manufacturer has been developing the engine in response to upcoming MotoGP rules that include smaller engine capacities and limits on electronic aids and aerodynamics aimed at improving competition and reducing costs. Having the engine operational at this stage gives Aprilia confidence as it balances the development of its current RS GP bike with the preparation of the next generation prototype.
The 850cc engine project has been in progress for some time due to the long lead times required for a MotoGP power unit. Aprilia engineers are now able to focus on refining performance and reliability while gathering crucial data from early tests. This proactive approach is designed to ensure the team is fully prepared when the new regulations take effect and that riders have a competitive machine from the outset.
By having the new engine ready well ahead of schedule, Aprilia positions itself strongly against rivals who are also developing next generation power units. Early testing and evaluation allow engineers to make adjustments and optimizations that could prove decisive once the championship transitions to the 850cc formula.
