Formula 1’s private pre season test at Barcelona rolled into its fourth day with teams continuing to peel back the layers on their new machinery in complete secrecy. With no television coverage and only limited timing data filtering out, Day 4 became all about reading between the lines as mileage, reliability and driver feedback took priority over outright lap times.
Mercedes once again looked supremely confident as they racked up a heavy lap count through the day. Their focus appeared to be on long runs and system checks rather than chasing headline grabbing times, a sign that the team is comfortable with the baseline of its new car. The consistency of their running was one of the most striking features of the session and quietly suggested that the foundations are strong.
Ferrari’s programme drew plenty of attention as Lewis Hamilton returned to the cockpit and logged significant mileage. The emphasis from the Scuderia was clearly on understanding tyre behaviour and balance across different fuel loads. Those close to the team hinted at positive feedback from the cockpit, with the car appearing stable and predictable, even if Ferrari kept its true pace firmly under wraps.
McLaren also ticked important boxes on Day 4, adding solid data to its growing test programme. The car ran without obvious issues and completed a series of structured runs that pointed to a methodical approach rather than a flashy one. The team will likely be pleased with how smoothly the day unfolded, especially given the complexity of the current regulations.
Aston Martin finally made its on track appearance, marking a key milestone in its winter preparations. While the lap count was more modest compared to some rivals, simply getting the car out and running cleanly was the main objective. Early signs suggested the team is being cautious and deliberate, choosing to build up gradually rather than push too hard too soon.
Elsewhere on the grid, midfield teams focused on reliability and data collection. There were no major stoppages or red flag moments, which in itself made Day 4 valuable. Engineers spent much of the day cycling through setup options, running aero tests and validating simulations against real world conditions at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya.
