Ferrari is reportedly preparing to lodge a formal protest at the opening race of the 2026 Formula One season in Melbourne. The Italian team is said to be upset with rival manufacturers who appear to be exploiting a loophole in the new engine regulations. These regulations, which introduce major changes for 2026, cap engine compression ratios at sixteen to one. However, some teams may have found a way to gain extra performance by effectively using a higher ratio when the engine reaches operating temperature.
The controversy has created tension across the paddock with Ferrari and other engine makers concerned about fairness and compliance. An official protest could challenge the legality of rival power units, potentially leading to penalties, design revisions, or rule clarifications later in the season. While the talks of a protest come mainly from paddock sources and media reports, it highlights the intensity and high stakes of Formula One competition even before the first race begins.
