Oscar Piastri has made it clear that he expects to be given a fair and equal opportunity at McLaren once again as Formula One heads into the all important 2026 season. After a fiercely competitive 2025 campaign alongside teammate Lando Norris, the Australian believes the team largely upheld its promise of allowing both drivers to race on merit and wants that same approach to continue.
The 2025 season marked a major step forward for Piastri. He emerged as a genuine title contender, spending significant parts of the year at the top of the championship standings and matching Norris with seven race victories. Although Norris ultimately claimed the drivers’ title, Piastri’s performances confirmed his status as one of the grid’s elite talents and a long term cornerstone of McLaren’s future.
Much of the discussion last season revolved around McLaren’s internal racing philosophy, often referred to as the Papaya Rules. These guidelines were designed to give both drivers the freedom to compete while avoiding unnecessary conflict that could hurt the team’s overall results. While a few high profile moments sparked debate among fans and pundits, Piastri has insisted he never doubted the team’s intent and views such situations as part of high level competition rather than favoritism.
Looking ahead, the 2026 season presents a completely new challenge for everyone in Formula One. Sweeping regulation changes to engines and aerodynamics mean that competitive order could shift dramatically. For McLaren, maintaining harmony between two drivers capable of winning championships may prove just as important as nailing the technical side of the new rules.
Piastri has also highlighted the importance of starting the season strongly, especially with the opening race set to take place in Australia.
