Mexico’s film industry is set for a significant boost following the announcement of a new 30 percent tax incentive designed to attract productions and strengthen local filmmaking. The initiative has received strong backing from actress and producer Salma Hayek and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who presented the measure as a strategic investment in culture and economic growth.
The incentive offers a tax credit of up to 30 percent on qualifying production expenses incurred within Mexico. It is structured to benefit a broad range of audiovisual projects including feature films, television series, streaming productions, documentaries, and animation. By tying eligibility to local spending requirements, the policy aims to ensure that the financial impact directly supports Mexican crews, technical professionals, creative talent, and service providers.
Hayek, one of Mexico’s most internationally recognized film figures, praised the initiative as a long awaited step toward making the country more competitive in the global production landscape. She emphasized that Mexico possesses world class talent, diverse filming locations, and a strong creative tradition, but often loses projects to other territories offering more aggressive financial incentives. President Sheinbaum framed the policy as part of a broader cultural and economic development strategy.
