Max Verstappen Chooses Number Three for F1 2026 Season

Max Verstappen has confirmed that he will switch his racing number to three for the 2026 Formula One season ending the use of his familiar number thirty three and the single digit one that he used as reigning world champion. The change reflects both his personal preference and adjustments in Formula One rules that allow drivers to select different permanent numbers during their careers.

Until now Verstappen had raced with number thirty three since his debut in 2015 and used number one in the season following his championship victory. Number three has long been his favourite number and he expressed relief at being able to finally use it following the retirement of former teammate Daniel Ricciardo who previously held the rights to the numeral. The transition also comes after Lando Norris claimed the number one plate for the 2026 season leaving Verstappen to choose a different number.

The switch to number three is purely a personal decision rather than a symbolic gesture or competitive tactic. Verstappen has stated that he simply prefers the single digit three to his previous numbers and is excited to begin the season with it. The new rules in Formula One make it possible for drivers to make such changes which was not an option earlier in his career.
