Mona Fastvold has described her film The Testament of Ann Lee as very different from a traditional musical. The movie tells the story of Ann Lee, the founder of the Shaker movement, using music and movement that emerge naturally from the characters and their world rather than following the usual pattern of staged song sequences. Fastvold collaborated closely with composer Daniel Blumberg and choreographer Celia Rowlson Hall to ensure that the songs and choreography felt like an organic part of the story. The film uses adapted Shaker hymns and original music to deepen the audience’s understanding of the characters’ devotion and struggle.
Amanda Seyfried stars as Ann Lee, delivering a performance that blends vocals with expressive movement to capture the intensity and spiritual fervor of the Shakers.
