Moto racing is built on speed precision and bravery but behind every thrilling lap stands a group of people whose safety often goes unnoticed. For the 2026 season MotoGP has introduced an important rule change aimed at better protecting track marshals who work just metres away from high speed action. The update focuses on what happens after a rider crashes and how a bike can be restarted during an active session.
Until now riders were often allowed to restart stalled bikes in run off areas close to the racing line. While this sometimes helped riders rejoin the race quickly it also placed marshals in extremely vulnerable positions. Assisting a restart meant stepping into open areas while other riders continued to pass at full speed which created unnecessary risk in an already dangerous environment.
From 2026 this practice will no longer be allowed. Any bike that stops running after a crash must first be moved to a protected area behind safety barriers before a restart can be attempted. In most cases this means pushing the motorcycle to a service road or another secure location away from live racing. Marshals can still help riders but only once the situation is fully protected and no longer exposed to oncoming traffic.
The reasoning behind the rule is simple and long overdue. Reducing the time marshals spend in open run off zones significantly lowers the chance of secondary incidents. It also removes pressure from riders who previously felt the need to rush a restart in unsafe conditions. Safety officials retain the authority to prevent a bike from rejoining the track if it is damaged or leaking fluids ensuring that rider safety is also maintained.
This change is not limited to the premier class alone. The rule will apply across all FIM circuit racing championships with encouragement for national series to adopt similar standards. It represents a shift toward prioritising the people who make racing possible rather than only focusing on competitive outcomes.
