IndyCar drivers have just received a major boost in their long running pursuit of finding a smoother path into Formula 1. With the FIA revising the super licence points structure for the series starting in 2026, the landscape of global open wheel racing is shifting in a meaningful way. The governing body has acknowledged the rising status and competitiveness of IndyCar by increasing the number of points awarded for finishing positions across much of the championship table. While the champion already received the full requirement of forty points under the old system, the middle and upper midfield positions now offer significantly higher rewards. This means finishing third to ninth can now help a driver accumulate enough points across multiple seasons to reach the threshold for an F1 super licence, something that used to be far more difficult without winning the title outright.
This adjustment makes IndyCar more than a destination series. It turns it into a credible pathway for drivers aiming to showcase their talent on the global stage. The move also comes at a moment when the sport is growing in the United States with more races, more attention and increasing commercial incentives. For Formula 1 teams evaluating future driver prospects, the stronger points allocation allows them to consider IndyCar performers with more flexibility. The difference could influence how young talents plan their careers as they weigh between the traditional European junior ladder and the opportunity rich environment of American open wheel competition.
Still, the path is not suddenly wide open. Formula 2 remains the most direct feeder series with guaranteed eligibility for its top finishers. IndyCar’s new structure still demands consistency and strong championship results over time to reach the required total. The FIA’s update does not make the super licence automatic, but it does make the journey far fairer for drivers competing in a demanding championship that features varied tracks, oval challenges and fierce competition.
